In this English-language volume of essays, László L. SIMON—Hungarian writer, editor, cultural policy-maker, and former Director General of the Hungarian National Museum—brings together a selection of his most consequential writings from recent years. The essays examine the historical development and contemporary state of Hungarian cultural policy in a manner accessible to an international scholarly audience. Several contributions explore the evolving role of museums and their responsibilities in the twenty-first century. He places particular emphasis on questions of artistic freedom and the institutional autonomy of cultural organizations. The volume also includes reflective texts in which the author considers his own position and responsibilities as a writer.
